The DIF DTC Research Programme for 2006 - 2009

Collaboration at its best...

The MoD endorsed the Phase II plan for the Data and Information Fusion (DIF) at GD UK's Defence Technology Centre (DTC), in a contract worth £30M. The MoD will contribute 50% and the project will run for a further three years. This venture is a consortium primed by GD UK Limited, with BT and QinetiQ as industrial partners, and with eight academic partners.

The Phase II programme seeks to build on the successful Phase I research programme by integrating successful outputs into cluster projects that draw on the strengths of several projects. The resource allocated to cluster projects is around 50% of the total budget. The remaining new funding will seek to support new stand-alone projects - but will be aimed very much at the problem space of 2015. There is currently little room in the MoD equipment programme, and successful research is only likely to find a significant market in the longer term, and so should be aimed at the longer term now.

There have been some interesting exploitations of DTC Phase I technologies already. Highlights include engagement with both Wiltshire and Surrey County Councils on planning the response to a terrorist incident - this work started prior to the atrocities on 7th July; collaboration with the Human Factors DTC in collecting data from CWID to assess how stress affected decision making; and several opportunities in the tracking area.

The theme structure adopted by the DIF DTC divides the research programme into groups of projects, each addressing related problem areas and employing broadly similar methodologies. As the DIF DTC research programme evolves and new projects come on line, in response to changing research priorities, it is necessary from time to time to revise themes definition and review project allocations.
